if you use hddtemp -n, then you do not need to strip out the temperature using the cut commands.

i.e. temp=`/usr/local/sbin/hddtemp -n ${drive}`

I played with Nagios a number of years ago and have had it monitoring a couple of clients networks. More recently I have been playing around with OpenNMS though I do check in on the Nagios project from time to time. If you do ever put together a post outlining your Nagios setup I would certainly be interested in reading it over. Have you used any other network/service monitoring products?
