Monitor your server with Monitorix

This week’s TechMail is Monitor your server with Monitorix which discusses the Monitorix web package that provides a nice almost-real-time monitoring interface for your system that is accessible via the web.

On a side note, why is it that almost everytime I write these tips, some boob always asks “is there something free and equivalent on the Windows side?”. Sheesh. Yeah, it’s called Linux and then you can use the exact same software — and it’s still free.

I mean come on.. these are *Linux* tips. Sorry if you get OSS-envy from them, but maybe you need to pony up and either use Linux or figure out Cygwin.

    Hi,

Monitorix version before 2009.0 was pretty old but the new version was not that easy to package. I thought I succeeded, and ask Misc to upload it to cooker.

But in the end, I’ve just figured out the software itself is very buggy, or at least not generic enough : Mandriva isn’t supported and several paths are hardcoded.

So actually, the cooker package worths nothing. I don’t want to bother fixing it, it’s crap. So if you have little time, I would suggest you to take a look at it, decide to fix it (which involves big patches in the code and/or re-developing monitorix…) or maybe remove it from cooker.

Errr… I just install from source. Works fine on Mandriva 2009. No patching or customization required.

Having said that no, no I don’t have a little time to fix this, not that I think it needs to be patched or “re-developed”.

I’d just tell anyone interested to download the source and install it. It’s not hard.

Just a question : in case of a multihost configuration, do we have to install the httpd server on the monitored servers ?

I’m not sure. I haven’t ever gotten around to a multi-host situation. The docs aren’t the greatest, so there isn’t much to go on from there IIRC.
