Merry Christmas to all my compatriots, friends, and (strangely enough) the folks who find my blog interesting enough to read! =)
Got spoiled something fierce this year. Feels nice. =) wOO! 25th anniversary Transformers boxed set! I’ll be reliving my childhood for a long time to come… I have no idea how many hours 16 DVDs are but it sure sounds like a lot. =) And all the other goodies I got spoiled with… well.. I’ve got a great set of girls here. Mind you, I spoiled them as well.
Post-Christmas kitty in a month! He’s so cute! He’s the bottom-left one. I think he’s 3 weeks old in this picture.

I’m in crunch mode right now… wrote 2400 words today, another 4300 to get back on target (need to write 1167 words per day to make the 50k target at the end of the month).
Not an excuse, really, but this was a stupid work week with stupid little things going on that totally distracted me and by the time I had some downtime, trying to be creative and imaginative were the last things I wanted (vegetative state, here I come!)
Anyways, aside from having to fix some electrical issues (lose wires in breaker box are _not_ a good thing as my melted wires will attest to!), I’ve been able to write more today than anytime this week. And since there’s nothing decent on tonight, I hope to crank out those 4300 words tonight and then I can be sane and try to keep up.
Oh, for anyone interested in seeing some stats, my profile page on nanowrimo.org has my word counts as I update them.

So last year I participated in National Novel Writing Month but didn’t pull it off. The idea is to go nuts and write a 50k word novel during the month of November. People all around the world do it, and it’s quite fun but very time consuming and pretty crazy. Last year there was too much going on for me to really focus, so I think I hit about 20k words. Not quite an epic fail, but not nearly what I had set out for.
This year I’m at it again. I’ve got some vague ideas as to what to write about and it should be fun. I’m definitely aiming for 50k words this month so stuff like blogging and other “extra-curicular” activities will be on hold this month while I churn out a novel (or something vaguely resembling one).
Wish me luck!

Every time you turn around someone is posting about, talking about, writing about, or otherwise having something to do with H1N1. While I get this is a new flu, and the media have a job to do in increasing sales and readership, the sheer volume of “OMG! H1N1!” is frightening. Found this good graphic that puts things into perspective:

I sincerely hope no one gets H1N1, yes, but come on folks… it’s obvious in the grand scheme of things that it’s just another illness making the rounds. It actually frightens me that more people have died from TB or meningitis in the last 300 days than swine flu.

Ok, I’ve just updated my Fedora Planet config so that only stuff in the Linux category (and sub-categories, like “Red Hat”) will show up on Planet. Sorry if you felt I was spamming Planet with non-Linuxy stuff, I wasn’t really thinking about breaking it down further to just having on-topic stuff show up there. Thanks Tim for bringing that up.
Not sure how long it takes Planet to update the feed address, but I’m hoping it won’t take too long.

Blogging has been on my short list the last two weeks. Yesterday the contractor we hired finally finished putting up new insulation and vinyl siding on the house, and I have to admit he did a fantastic job and it looks bloody sharp. Pics to come (the eavestrough isn’t up yet, a different sub-contracted company does that, so the house looks a bit weird without it, hence no pictures yet). Oh, and I painted the front door red. Somewhat strange, but my wife likes it and oddly enough it does look pretty neat.
I had to put my cat to sleep last week. Tika, who was 17, was down to 4.5lbs (down from 7.5lbs in May, and about 14 or 15lbs a year ago). Not sure what was wrong with her, but she wasn’t eating, was suffering from muscle weakness (started falling when she walked and sliding off the couch when she slept). If she was in pain, she kept it to herself. Instead of trying to do diagnostics and all kinds of (expensive) treatment, we opted to just put her down. I think that was for the best; I honestly don’t think she would have lasted the week and my daughter was quite upset about her falling and stuff, so although it sucked horribly, it was the best thing to do. That was my Tuesday last week.
Then Friday we got a new Maine Coon kitty who is completely white with a grey smudge on the top of his head. Feisty little turkey. His name is Sammy and he’s 2mos old and a complete nutjob. But he really likes my daughter and likes to cuddle and most importantly he’s taken our mind of the loss of Tika. His paws are *huge* though… he’s going to be one big cat for sure. Today he and Pepper started wrestling without growls.. definitely a good sign. Pics of him will come soon enough (he’s exceptionally cute).
And my father is currently in Malaysia getting married. That’ll sure make things different as well when they get back.
Interesting times. Been distracted the last few weeks as a result but with the home reno’s done, and the cats getting along, that’s a little less to worry about. Maybe two weeks of peace before my dad gets back and the ruckus starts again. =)
