Windows 7 House Party

No, I’m not throwing one although it would be amusing… sad thing is, I’m geekish and all my friends know it, and a large majority of them (also sadly) use Windows yet I think if I threw a Windows 7 house party… no one would show. I’m quite certain all my friends would think it silly. Heck, I’d have more luck getting people to my place if I threw a Partylite candle party!

But, the whole thing is highly amusing. First, you have to look at the videos. These are priceless. I must know how much you get paid to look so dang happy showing people the marvels of an innovative “search” feature. Seriously, you need to check these out. I can’t say they’re good for a laugh… they’re not. But they’re certainly bewildering and bewitching… like… well, nothing comes to mind. But don’t watch the introductory video (well, if you must, go for it)… it’s long and I was almost crying by the end of it. Yeah, it’s that bad. Here it is: Windows 7 house party host help videos.

The reason why I post this isn’t to necessarily mock Microsoft. They’re doing a fine job of that themselves. But I wanted to point out an absolutely brilliant piece of journalism that was written because of these videos and is extremely amusing. (Thanks Maurice for posting the link on the ELUG list!). Microsoft’s grinning robots or the Brotherhood of the Mac. Which is worse?.

I’ll forgive you if you don’t watch the videos. Only a morbid fascination had me watch three of them (and by then it was just so patently ridiculous I couldn’t justify spending another moment watching more), but this article is pure genius. Some of the comments are mighty amusing as well.

I knew it… Social networking rots your brain

Well, maybe not but there’s an interesting survey of college students that correlates Facebook usage with grades, and how people (keeping in mind this is just a survey, and there are no real conclusions by the authors) who spend more time on Facebook have lower grades. So, I come to the conclusion that either: a) social networking like Facebook and Twitter make you less intelligent, or b) less intelligent people spend more time doing social networking. (And before anyone hits me, this is (moderately) tongue-in-cheek).

Of course, one could argue that these “social networks” are more “anti-social networks” because people spend more time “interacting” with people over Facebook, Twitter, text messages, and email than they do face-to-face. It’ll be interesting to see if in 20 years we have a generation of people that don’t even know how to talk to people face-to-face anymore. I mean, if you can order books or groceries online, why go to a traditional store and rub shoulders with “real” people at all? If you can text someone, why bother talking to them on the phone?

I think all of these technologies that are supposed to make us more connected are actually making us all social invertebrates (a nice way of saying socially retarded). And lazy. I mean, good grief, this weekend I heard from my sister-in-law about a 14 year old girl she’s known for years who texts her dad one floor above her in the same bloody house to tell him stuff instead of getting off her duff and walking a few steps. Repeatedly, despite how upset her dad gets.

I’m not a big social networking kind of guy since I generally find people intolerable on these social networking sites (people should really have to learn to either spell or learn how to use a bloody spell checker!), but I do find they have some use (i.e. contact me via Facebook since I couldn’t be bothered to give you my real email address, etc.). I’m also only on Facebook *maybe* 1hr/week.

Of course, it’s also quite possible that I’m already a social invertebrate so none of this applies to me. =)

If programming languages were religions…

Found this really cute/funny blog post today about programming languages being religions, or the comparison of programming languages to religions (i.e. C being Judaism, Visual Basic being Satanism, etc.). Quite funny.

Here’s the link: If programming languages were religions….

Mac, Linux, Windows, YouTube.. scary

Was poking around and found some amusing “get a mac” ads on YouTube, done SouthPark style:

South Park Mac vs PC

South Park Mac vs PC vs Linux

OMG… YouTube is scary. You should check out this fellow trying to explain Why Linux is Better Than Windows. I think this guy wrote his script, drank a lot, and then made the video.

Oh, and he has trouble saying Mandriva. Is it really that hard?

hehe… I can’t stop laughing… Anyways, it frightens me just who is preaching Linux.. I’m not cure I’d buy anything from this guy.
