Well, I’ve been working for Red Hat for two years, one month, and 14 days now. It’s actually amazing how time flies. I guess when you’re doing something you love, with amazing people you respect and enjoy working with, time has no real bearing on anything. When I first started working for Linux-Mandrake (now Mandriva) back in 2000, I got Tux inked on the back of one leg. Tux is fairly generic and represented the beginning of my journey with Linux (well, the beginning of my paid journey anyways!). Tux is also much cooler to tattoo than the (sorry, but it’s true) silly top hat and magic wand that was the logo for Linux-Mandrake back in the day.

Shadowman, on the other hand, is timeless and just plain cool. If Red Hat turned into Yellow Hat or Purple Frog tomorrow, I think they’d be hard pressed to develop an icon like Shadowman. And I’ve wanted Shadowman tattooed on the other leg for about a year now (my daughter is also very much enamoured with Shadowman and told me that he would make an extremely cool tattoo.. and I agree). So yesterday the deed was done. Probably the fastest tattoo I’ve ever gotten, and the greatest skin grinder to date.

The sleeve is getting close to completion! Yikes… three sittings in 2 weeks. What was I thinking? Feels like as soon as the burning and peeling and itching settle down I’m off to do it again. =) At least the next session isn’t for two weeks yet… good to give the arm time to heal.

That rounds out everything below the elbow and about 1/3 above it. Contrary to what you might expect, the elbow itself isn’t bad… the wrists were much worse.

So my Flickr account now has pictures of my new in-progress sleeve. The first session was just the line work and that was done on July 18th and took 5hrs. Sessions 2 and 3 added color; session 2 was done this past Monday (the 17th of August) and took 6.5hrs, and session 3 was done yesterday (Saturday, the 22nd of August) and was 3.5hrs. I think it looks pretty sharp. I didn’t get pics of just session 2′s work, but that was mostly the vine creature and the dragon and the background on the lower forearm. Session 3 was the nebula in the “ditch” (which wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be but it bruised *fast*), finished off the dragon (the horns and eyes and some of the body), and also one missing bit on the inside wrist (I will tell you, the wrist is the worst).

So now half the tattoo itches like crazy, and part of it burns. Tomorrow the new stuff shouldn’t feel so tight anymore… then the itching will come. =)

Looking forward to hopefully getting the rest of the lower forearm done this coming Saturday (would have done more yesterday except there was a big tattoo show in Edmonton this weekend so the arm rests were at the show so we did all we could without it, but since I’m not a contortionist there was quite a bit we couldn’t do). Then it’s about 2 weeks off before doing some more work on the various nebula ideas we’ve got for the rest of the upper arm.

I’m really impressed with the results. I’ve found my permanent guy… if anyone in Edmonton is looking for a really really good tattoo artist, check out Jared at Crimson Empire. He did the “J” on the back of my neck and my forearm and I’m severely impressed with his work. Couldn’t have asked for a better guy to do it.

Every other tattoo was pretty good pain-wise… no big deal. This one wasn’t too bad either, except in a few tender spots… base of the skull has no meat to absorb the vibrations or something. Anyways, interesting sensation as I’m usually quite ticklish, and it hurt and tickled all at the same time along the back of the neck.
